CREDITS AND DEDUCTIONS TO CONSIDER
Tax Credits
Tax credits lower your actual taxes dollar-for-dollar, reducing the income tax you owe, allowing you a larger refund. There are two types of tax credits:
-
A nonrefundable tax credit means you get a refund only up to the amount you owe.
-
A refundable tax credit means you get a refund, even if it's more than what you owe.
Tax Deductions
Tax deductions only lower the amount of your taxable income.
Deductions are typically expenses incurred during the tax years that can be applied to reduce your gross income.
Earned Income Tax Credits - EITC
To qualify for EITC you must have earned income from working for someone or from running or owning a business or farm and meet basic rules. And, you must either meet additional rules for workers without a qualifying child or have a child that meets all the qualifying child rules for you.

Maximum Credit Amounts
The maximum amount of credit for Taxes Due 2023 is:
-
$6,935 with three or more qualifying children
-
$6,164 with two qualifying children
-
$3,733 with one qualifying child
-
$560 with no qualifying children.
Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit - Updated for Tax Year 2022
The child and dependent care credit is a tax credit that may help you pay for the care of eligible children and other dependents (qualifying persons). The credit is calculated based on your income and a percentage of expenses that you incur for the care of qualifying persons to enable you to go to work, look for work, or attend school.
The child tax credit is up to $3,000 of qualifying expenses (for a maximum credit of $1,050) for one child or dependent, or
up to $6,000 of qualifying (for a maximum credit of $2,100) for two or more children or dependents.

Can You Claim the Credit?
To be able to claim the credit for child and dependent care expenses, you must file Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, not Form 1040-NR-EZ, and meet all the tests in Tests you must meet to claim a credit for child and dependent care expenses next. Learn more.
Medical Deductions
The medical expense deduction is 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).
For example, if your AGI was $60,000, you can deduct out-of-pocket medical expenses above $4,500 in 2020. You will need to itemize your deductions in order to write off the expenses on your tax return.
You can generally include medical expenses you pay for yourself, as well as those you pay for someone who was your spouse or your dependent either when the services were provided or when you paid for them.

What Medical Expenses Qualify?
Medical expenses that qualify include services provided by physicians, surgeons, dentists and other medical professionals.
-
Medications
-
Medical devices, equipment and other medical supplies
-
Health and dental insurance premiums, if they are not reimbursed by your employer and the premiums are paid using after-tax dollars.
-
Long-term care and long-term care insurance.
-
Transportation and lodging costs if having to travel to a healthcare facility, this include mileage at a rate of 20 cents per mile. Learn more.
Charitable Deductions - Filing Year 2022
In 2022, taxpayers must return to itemizing their deductions on Schedule A to take a charitable tax deduction. The special 2021 rules were not extended. For 2022, the usual 60% of AGI ceiling on charitable cash contributions to qualified charities has been restored.

How do You Claim the Deductions?
Temporary Suspension of Limits on Charitable Contributions
In most cases, the amount of charitable cash contributions taxpayers can deduct on Schedule A as an itemized deduction is limited to a percentage (usually 60 percent) of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI). Qualified contributions are not subject to this limitation. Individuals may deduct qualified contributions of up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income. A corporation may deduct qualified contributions of up to 25 percent of its taxable income. Contributions that exceed that amount can carry over to the next tax year. To qualify, the contribution must be:
-
a cash contribution;
-
made to a qualifying organization;
-
made during the calendar year 2020
Contributions of non-cash property do not qualify for this relief. Taxpayers may still claim non-cash contributions as a deduction, subject to the normal limits.

DanPro Tax was fast. I was surprised that the low fee mentioned was real, with no hidden fees. Did my taxes with other large companies and was hit with hidden fees and a large tax bill. I will continue doing my taxes with DanPro Tax. --John Lewis
